A laser is emitted from the scanner at thousands of times per second. Conceptually, the beam is bounced off the subject scan area to pinpoint the exact location in space on an X, Y and Z coordinate system. Millions of these points are collected, forming a "point cloud" of the scanned area. These point clouds are then turned into 2D drawings or 3D models. The data is captured with amazing accuracy, surely to satisfy your tolerances.

BIM is the new direction within the AEC industry. Whether you're an owner, architect, engineer or contractor, your world is moving into 3D. We've compiled some information and additional resources to help assist you in your goals.
All the software that we use to process data is available in free versions through each respective company. Visit www.leica.com or www.FARO.com in order to download a free viewer that will allow you better understand point clouds and their many functions.
Faro Scene LT
Scene is powerful program that we use to process our scan data. It is sold by a company called FARO, but can be used to process all different types of laser scan data. This program can export clouds in all sorts of formats, including .pts, .ptx and .dxf for a direct AutoCAD import. A free version of this software is available online, and will give you limited access to its capabilities.

Leica Cyclone Viewer
Cyclone is a program developed by Leica in order to process laser scan data. It is used primarily for data aquired by Leica laser scanners, but all sorts of formats can be imported. Many different versions of this software are available, giving you the ability to turn the point cloud into whatever deliverable you may desire. A free viewer is available that will allow you to navigate around point clouds and get a feel for the tools that this program could provide your company.
Leica Truview Viewer
Truviews are a powerful tool that we provide for our clients in order to give them the ability to walk a jobsite without ever being there. This free viewer allows you to access the files that we have provided to you, and use them to their full capabilities. If you have been provided truviews by our company, make sure you download this viewer to ensure you access your product fully.
Kubit Plug-in for CAD
Kubit PointCloud is the premier software for working with laser scan data within the AutoCAD environment. In addition to managing millions of points, PointCloud offers a variety of functions, which facilitate and speed up the processing and evaluation of pointclouds in AutoCAD. PointCloud is hardware independent meaning that it will work with just about any scanner on the market.
Faro WebShare
Scene Webshare is the latest method to share your scan projects online. With this tool, you can upload and download your scans, view them and export them anywhere in the world. This can be an extremely useful conference or presentation tool, and is available for free on FARO's website.

More frequently asked questions!
As the industry continues to evolve, more and more software platforms are importing point clouds. A few examples would be Cyclone, AutoCAD, Revit, Google Sketchup, Pointtools, Scene and many others. Feel free to contact us today to find out if point clouds can be integrated into your workflow!
A point cloud is made up of millions of extremely accurate data points, all put together to create a highly detailed three dimensional image. Similar to pixels in a two dimensional image, these points combine to create an easily understood picture of the object being scanned.
This varies from job to job, but we typically take 2-4 working days to deliver a full point cloud, and 4-8 working days to deliver a model. Contact us to get a more accurate quote. Also we deliver in many different formats, ranging from Autocad, Revit and Cyclone to Google sketchup.
This is a very simple fix. Simply go to your AutoCAD menu bar, select view, and then change the visual styles to realistic. The point cloud should now show its intensity values.
Cross- sections of our pointclouds can be used to create highly accurate 2D as-built floor plans in a very short time period. Much faster than traditional methods, with all the accuracy of a typical laser scan.
A good way to envision a 3D wireframe is as a skeleton of a building. This can be used to fit panels, model from, or as a presentation piece. It is the simplest form of a 3D model.
A mesh is a 3D object representation consisting of a collection of vertices and polyons. Meshes are capable of holding large quantities of information and can be used to measure elevation values at various spots on a surface.
Along with the ability to create precise 3D models and extract accurate measurments, another useful tool of laser scanning is project visualization. Using color rich photos, we are able to create stunning presentation pieces.
Examples of software types range from AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks and Cyclone to Google Sketchup and Microstation.
3D point clouds can be delivered in a variety of formats, and can be taken to a variety of software platforms. This point cloud can be used as a base for creation of both 2D plans and 3D models, or as project verification.
Another great aspect of point clouds is they can be reused as the project goes on.
Three dimensional models of as-built conditions can be very useful for both clash detection and project planning. Using our laser scans as a base, we can create highly detailed models of mechanical and structural buildings.
All of our deliverables are customized for each individual project. We take our process and fine tune it to meet the clients goals. This assures client satisfaction on every job, every time.
